Don’t link religion with politics, carrying Bible is my choice: Vijayamma
Pained at the controversy created by a section of media on carrying Bible during the Maro Praja Prasthanam padayatra, YSR Congress honorary president Y S Vijayamma said that she was holding the holy book only to derive strength and confidence while addressing meetings.
“I am not a missionary to preach Christianity and all religions are equal to me. I keep the Bible with me forever and even took it to the Assembly as it gives me courage. I respect all religions and it is unfortunate that my personal decision is being given a communal colour,” she told reporters at Pulivendula in Dr YSR district on Sunday.
The remarks that Vijayamma is carrying Bible at the meetings do not hold water and it appears more a political statement rather than a religious one. If what she has been doing is wrong, then no politician should visit any place of worship to offer prayers so long as they hold Constitutional posts or public offices.
Chief Ministers and ministers offering the traditional silk clothes to the deities at Tirumala or any other temples in the state should be stopped. Even the Iftar parties hosted by non-Muslim leaders should be discontinued as the hosts offer prayers along with the devout Muslims by wearing the traditional cap.
“There is no religion for me except humanity which was taught to us by late Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. The traditional lamp in my brother’s house is eternal. If that lamp has to be cleaned, another one is lit till that time. Any religious head visiting our place stays at our home,” she said and urged the media not to link religion with politics.
Chandrababu Naidu, YSR, Jagan, Kiran, Botcha, KCR and many others wear the religious cap and scarf offered by Muslim brethren and address public meetings. That doesn’t mean they have embraced Islam and have taken to preaching and spreading the religion. It is a mark of respect shown by the leaders.
Religion should never be mixed with politics.
