I am the arrow shot by Jagananna: Sharmila
Bringing back the cherished memories of the late Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, his daughter Sharmila launched her padayatra, Maro Praja Prasthanam, at Idupulapaya in Dr YSR district on Thursday amid thunderous applause from milling crowds that thronged the meeting.
Accompanied by her mother and YSRC’s honorary president Y S Vijayamma, sister-in-law Y S Bharati and thousands of followers, Sharmila reached Idupulapaya , which turned into a sea of humanity, to take part in the all-faith prayer meet at YSR ghat.
The padayatra assumes significance as party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has been in jail while the leaders of ruling Congress and main opposition Telugu Desam are touring the entire state as part of their mass contact programme.
More than the party’s survival, the response for her march appears to remind people about the harassment and the injustice meted out to the family members of the late leader, who brought the Congress party to power in 2004 with his single-handed effort and ensured that it retained power in 2009.
To sum it up, Sharmila will follow her father’s footsteps in consoling the oppressed sections of the society and understanding their problems and take her brother’s political message to the people during the 3,000-km padayatra while traversing across the length and breadth of the entire state for next six months.
Even people will never forget the solace offered to them by Dr Rajasekhara Reddy, when he undertook similar march during the peak of summer in 2003 asking farmers not to end their lives, and also the decisions he took to ameliorate their problems after becoming Chief Minister a year later.
“Dr Rajasekhara Reddy stood by people when they were in distress and this the reason why they supported our family when they were being harassed by the rulers,” said YS Vijayamma.
Addressing the gathering, Vijayamma, in am emotion-filled voice, urged them to receive Sharmila with the same affection they showed towards Dr Rajasekhara Reddy and Jaganmohan Reddy. “I want the people to bless my child and make the padayatra a grand success. My husband died in a helicopter accident, my son is put behind bars for no fault of his and now my daughter is taking to streets to seek your support and blessings,” she said, striking a sentimental chord with the crowds. She went on to say: “I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for treating Jagan as your grandson, your son, and your brother. I solicit a similar patronage from you to my daughter.”
Lashing out at Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu for being indifferent towards people’s problems during his nine-year rule, she said he had never bothered about them except for boasting that he was the king maker at the Centre.
“He not only back-stabbed his father-in-law N T Rama Rao and usurped power but also diluted his welfare schemes and claimed credit for those programmes. He never cared to complete the pending irrigation projects to claim rights over surplus waters of river Krishna,” she said.
While recalling the welfare schemes launched by Dr Rajasekhara Reddy for the poor, Vijayamma asked people not to believe Naidu who was making false claims about his governance. “He started belt shops during his regime and is now promising to introduce prohibition. What a dichotomy in his claims? How do people believe him? I appeal to you not to fall prey to his false promises,” she said.
Not sparing the Congress government either, she said that the one crore people from all sections were suffering due to mismanagement of power, the farmers were not getting remunerative prices for agricultural produce and welfare schemes were being given a quiet burial. The prices of petroleum products and essential commodities have gone up considerably burdening the people to the maximum extent.
“Do you want this government to continue?” she asked and recalled that the Telugu Desam did not want to table no-confidence motion as it feared that YSRC would come to power if elections were held.
In her address, Sharmila, who described herself as an “arrow” shot by Jaganmogan Reddy, said that farmers, students, industrialists and other sections were suffering while Naidu, who came to power by dethroning N T Rama Rao, failed to implement welfare schemes.
“I am your Rajanna’s child, your Jagananna’s sister. I need your blessings and support,” she said establishing a connect with the masses.
“He is responsible for the suicide committed by thousands of humiliated farmers during his nine-year rule and has been supporting a nincompoop government,” she said.
The two parties were hand in glove and hatched several plots to suppress YSRC as  leaders of these two parties could not tolerate a third political formation in the state. Their nexus resulted in foisting of several false cases against Jaganmohan Reddy and got him arrested.
She said that the YSRC activists would be sporting the black badges till Jaganmohan Reddy was released. As daughter of the YSR,  sister of Jaganmohan Reddy and an ordinary worker of YSR Congress, I am starting my padayatra.
“I want your support in tearing apart the plots hatched by our opponents and let us bring back the golden rule of Dr Rajasekhara Reddy,” she added, and kick-started her padayatra from IIIIT.
Her uncle and YSR’s younger brother YS Vivekananda Reddy too joined the family in offering prayers at YSR’s mausoleum in Idupulapaya.
