He might have arrived almost two hours late but jailed YSR Congress MP, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, stole the limelight the moment he came to the Assembly House on Thursday to cast his vote in the Presidential election.
YSRC chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy comes out with his mother Y.S. Vijayalakshmi after casting his vote for the Presidential election in the Assembly on Thursday.
Supposed to arrive between 10 am and 10.15 am, the Lok Sabha MP from Kadapa finally arrived at 12.20 pm due to a delay at the jail. Immaculately dressed in a blue shirt and gray trousers, Mr Jagan Reddy, lodged in Chanchalguda jail since May 28 in the disproportionate assets case against him, was brought under heavy police escort. The court had earlier permitted him and another jailed former minister, Mr Mopidevi Venkataramana, who arrived about half an hour earlier, to cast their vote in the Presidential election.
Both spent about 10 minutes at the polling station before being taken back to jail post-vote. Received with a peck on the cheek and forehead from mother Vijayalakshmi, an MLA and acting president of YSR Congress, Mr Jagan Reddy reportedly had a brief chat with her inside the Assembly building. “A visibly moved Ms Vijayalakshmi blessed him,” an official said.
The police did not allow him to interact with the others and the waiting media. The environment electrified the moment Mr Reddy stepped off the car (a black Mahindra Scorpio), with slogans of “Jai Jagan... Jai YSR” from the assembled supporters. Party MLAs such as Ms Srikanth Reddy and Ms Sobha Nagi Reddy and MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy rushed towards him, throwing security cover to wind.
Greeting the waiting party leaders, mediapersons and police personnel with a smile and ‘namaskar’, he rushed to the polling booth along with the other YSRCP leaders. Jagan cast his vote along with mother Ms Vijayalakshmi, 17 party MLAs and Mr Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy. While he wished several Congress MLAs present there, senior Congress leader Mr Gade Venkat Reddy was seen waiting outside for nearly half-an-hour to greet Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy.
